The latest Reserve Bank financial aggregates extend a pattern that has been building for several months: Australian businesses are still leaning on credit, even while borrowing costs remain elevated and lenders continue to scrutinise applications closely.
Private sector credit continued to grow over the month and across the year, with business lending again a key contributor to overall momentum.

For SMEs, this is not just a macroeconomic footnote. Stronger business credit can signal confidence, investment and expansion, but it can also reflect the pressure of higher operating costs, delayed customer payments and the need to fund working capital. In practical terms, two businesses may be borrowing for very different reasons: one to buy equipment and scale, another to bridge a short-term cash flow gap. Lenders will usually treat those scenarios differently.

That makes the latest figures an extension of the May credit update, rather than a clean break from earlier trends. Business borrowers are still operating in a market where demand for finance is active, but approval outcomes depend heavily on documentation, serviceability, security, trading history and how clearly the loan purpose is explained.

For owners considering finance, the key lesson is preparation. Before applying, it is worth reviewing whether the loan is intended to generate revenue, improve efficiency, manage seasonal timing or cover a structural shortfall. That distinction matters because a lender may look more favourably on borrowing that is tied to a clear commercial return, such as a vehicle, machinery, inventory or a contract-backed expansion.

Borrowers should also avoid focusing only on whether funding is available. The bigger question is whether the repayment structure will remain manageable if revenue softens, costs rise or rates stay higher for longer. It can help to model repayments under different rate and term assumptions before committing to a facility.

For businesses planning to approach lenders in the coming months, useful steps include:

  • Updating financial statements, BAS records and bank statements before starting an application.
  • Preparing a simple explanation of the loan purpose and expected business benefit.
  • Checking whether secured, unsecured, asset finance or working capital options best match the need.
  • Allowing a cash flow buffer rather than relying on the lowest possible repayment.

The broader credit data suggests business borrowing remains resilient, but resilience does not remove the need for discipline. In a competitive and selective lending market, the strongest applicants are often those who can show not only why they need funds, but how the debt will be serviced without putting day-to-day operations under unnecessary strain.
